LIQUOR AND CRIME

Alliance Sees Link (Wew Zrotana t'rans Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. The world-wide problem of increasing crime and delinquency was linked with liquor, said the annual report of the general superintendent of the New Zealand Alliance (Mr H. W. Milner) presented to the annual meeting today. The 15 to 20 age group between now and 1965 was expected to increase by more than 70 per cent. Justice Department figures showed criminal cases from 1948 to 1958 had increased from 28.72 for every 1000 of population to 52.6 In both prison and Borstal commitments the 15 to 20 age groups showed three and four-fold increases.

"Thus, while the liquor trade may look at population increases and larger numbers of youthful customers, the attention of the authorities must be drawn constantly to the havoc liquor has wrought and will continue to bring the people, particularly if restraints are relaxed and evening liquor consumption is projected into restaurants and clubs,” said Mr Milner.
