HUNGARIAN COOK ON 10 COUNTS

Gaoled For Breaking And Entering (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July is’. Youthful suffering in Auschwitz Concentration Camp, later upheaval in the 1956 Hungarian revolution, and a state of spiritual turmoil were the "empty lot" of Vilmos Belu Schnieder, Mr A. A. Coates, S.M., was told in the Magistrate’s Court in Auckland today. Schnieder, a 25-year-old Hungarian cook, appeared on 10 charges of breaking and entering. He admitted two last week and a further eight this morning and was sentenced to imprisonment.

Seeking leniency, Mr A. J. Nixon listed Schnieder’s background and said he had attempted to surrender to the police after his wrongdoing. The Magistrate said the stark facts were that Schnieder stole just because he was short of money. Two psychiatrists had reported Schnieder responsible for his acts and the seriousness and flagrancy of his conduct had to be impressed on him. The Magistrate said he would not impose corrective training as had been his first intention, but Schnieder- would be imprisoned for nine months with a year’s probation to follow on terms that he live and work as directed and make £75 restitution.
