Sportsman’s Notebook VITAL INTER-CLUB SQUASH MATCH
The last round in a most interesting inter-club squash rackets competition will be played this evening when Christchurch A meets Wigram in the A grade. In the B grade, which has more teams, two further rounds will be played after tomorrow evening’s matches. Christchurch A is so far unbeaten in this competition, but Wigram suffered a very narrow loss to Officers’ Club in the fourth round. If Wigram, last year’s winner, beats Christchurch A this evening, a play-off will be necessary between these two teams and Officers’ Club, which should beat Junior Chamber this evening to finish with four wins in five matches.
In this evening’s contest, which will be played at the Christchurch Club’s courts in Chester street, main interest will centre upon the meeting of the top players, S. M. Hope (Wigram) and R. G. Pattinson (Christchurch). In the fourth round Hope beat D. J. Triggs (Officers’ Club), who had beaten Pattinson in the Christchurch closed championships in the previous week.
The other members of the two teams also seem evenly matched, with Christchurch fielding H. S. Gair, M. O. Holdsworth and G. C. P. Beadel, and R. M. Hancock, J. S. Boys and G. C. Hubbard representing Wigram. * * * Cricket Dinner The presentation of the Technos trophies to the Canterbury Plunket Shield cricket team will be made at a dinner .on August 12. Canterbury won the contest, held for the first time last summer, for contributing most to brighter and more interesting cricket. Canterbury will hold an engraved cup, valued at £250, for a year, and will be . presented with a plaque as a permanent reminder of the team’s success. Each member of the team will be presented with a watch. * * * Table Tennis Match The touring Australian table tennis players, G. Jennings and M. Wilcox, will travel from Christchurch to Timaru this morning for their match against the South Island representatives in the St. Pat’s gymnasium this evening. The South Island players will be B. A. Foster (Otago) and J. Armstrong (Canterbury). Armstrong held the South Island men’s singles title in 1958 and 1959, and was narrowly beaten
by Foster in the final of this year’s event Last week Foster recorded a win over the present New Zealand champion, A. Tomlinson, in a semi-final of the North Island championships. • * « Fine Kicking The New South Wales Rugby team this season has profited greatly from points scored by its fly-half, J. Dowse. In a recent match against Queensland both teams scored four tries, but Dowse added 20 points with his kicking. He landed three penalty goals, four conversions and a field goal. In the previous week he had scored 19 points for his team. Dowse takes only three steps for his place kicks, and his accuracy is said to be uncanny. * * « Olympic Farewell A farewell function for some members of the New Zealand team to the Olympic Games in Rohm will be held by the Pioneer Amateur Sports Club tomorrow evening. Those to be farewelled will be the four Canterbury member's of the hockey team, N. Hobson, M. McKinnon, R. Gillespie and J. Abrams, and Mr J. A. Mclnnes, who will attend to judge at the wrestling events. S » « Presentation Evening A presentation evening for the Canterbury basketball players chosen to tour Australia with the New Zealand team was held recently by the Kakatai, St. Nicholas, West Old Girls and Technical clubs. Mrs P. Edmonds and Misses C. McMaster and S. Patrick were given cheques by their clubs; and Miss J. Dunlop was presented with a chiming clock. Speaking for the players, Mrs Edmonds thanked the clubs and players in Canterbury for making the tour possible.
