SCHOOL PAINTING CUP

“Co-operation” This Year’s Theme

The subject announced for this year’s competition for the New Zealand School Painting Cup is “Co-operation.”* Younger children may think of painting their home or their vegetable garden showing all members of the family working harmoniously together on something that will benefit them all. Older children may depict cooperation on a world basis, such as some aspect of the United Nations' work, the International Geophysical Year or World Refugee Year, says the organiser (Miss Cora gilding, of Kaikoura). Thirty of the pictures painted in last, year’s New Zealand competition are now being shown in the Japanese schools which entered for their own Japanese Cup, the subject being the same for both countries, Mr Kobayashi, director of the Japanese U.N.E.S.C.O. Art League, wrote that the cup had been awarded to the Yotsuya Daisan nrlmary school. He said that the 30 New Zealand pictures had greatly interested the Japanese children, and were much adrnred by them. The arrival of the Japanese pictures has been delayed but when they arrive it is hoped one will be sent to each of the New Zealand children whose paintings were selected to be sent to Japan.
