Cycling Italian Wins Tour De France
(N.Z. Press Association—<Copyright) PARIS. July 17. Italy's Gastone Nencini, a quiet but stubborn man, today won the forty-seventh Tour de France, the world’s longest and toughest bicycle race over 2607 miles around France, across flat lands, and up and down some of Europe’s highest mountain passes. It was the first Italian victory in the international race since the late champion, Fausto Coppi, won it eight years ago, American Associated Press said Nencini managed to win the gruelling race without winning any of the 21 stages. But he always arrived high up in the pack every day, and thus returned the smallest aggregate time. The leading placings were:—Gastone Nencini (Italy ), 112 hr Bmin 42sec, 1: Graziano Battistini (Italy). 112 hr 13min 4sec, 2; Jean Adiaenssens (Belgium). 112 hr 19min 6sec, 3: Mans Junuemann (Germany). 112 hr 20min 3sec, 4; Joseph Planchaert (Belgium), 112 hr 21min 47sec, 5; Raymond Mastrotto (France), 112 hr 24min 54sec, 6.
