Ice Hockey CUP COMPETITION OPENS
Hawks Beat Wolves In First Game The Hawks ice hockey • team opened the competitive season with a good 7-5 win over Wolves at the Centaurus rink last evening in the opening round of the Christchurch Cup. First goal of the game went to Hawks, when Bainton beat the goalie with a fierce shot. Wolves were quick to strike back, and Adamson took an assist from Fisher to flick his shot into the net. A long short by Fisher beat the goalie to put Wolves ahead, but Van der Grein tied the score with a remarkable solo run. Two successive goals by Adamson ended the first spell with Wolves leading 4t2. The Hawks’ goalie spent a torrid six minutes in the second half defending nrolonged attacks from all angles until Wicks slammed one home from in front to make the score 4-3. After nine minutes Atkinson tied the game 4-all with a nicely angled shot. Hawks took the lead a minute later from a shot by Van der Grein. After 12 minutes Offord stored for Hawks and Robinson flicked one in from a close position. The final spell opened at a fast pace, with both teams close to scor-. ing, but it was not until nine minutes later that Bainton pierced the defence to score for Hawks. Another Hawks goal came from Bainton a minute later making the final score: Hawks 7, Wolves 5.
