GOLF MANAWATU-WANGANUI WINS RUSSELL GRACE CUP, 6-3
"The Press" Special Service
WELLINGTON, July 18. After handsome wins in two of the three foursomes matches this morning, Canterbury seemed to have bright prospects of a win in the national final of the Russell Grace Gup for inter-pro-vincial women’s team golf, but it slumped badly in the singles, and Manawatu-Wanganui won by six matches to three. The match was played at the Paraparaumu Beach course. The top foursomes went to Wanganui-Manawatu (Mrs J. Mangan and Mrs R. Laugeson). Their win over Miss S. Grigg and Miss P. Bull was marked by splendid driving—Mrs Laugeson very nearly holed her tee shot at the 142 yd fourteenth—but mediocre approaching. Beautiful play by Miss Grigg enabled Canterbury to halve the fifteenth, and then Miss Bull played an immaculate approach to the green for a win at the sixteenth. However, the match was in safe keeping at the seventeenth with the WanganuiManawatu pair 2 up. Perhaps the most notable foursomes win was that of Miss H. Buchanan and Miss B. Murray (Canterbury) over Miss A. Naish and Mrs D. Henderson. The wellperformed Wanganui-Manawatu players were under pressure
throughout the match, and the Canterbury pair won 3 and 2. Nor was there ever any doubt about the win of Miss E. M. B, Nutt and Mrs H. Currie (Canterbury) over Miss S. Binning and Miss B. Anderson. Two up at the turn, the Canterbury players won 4 and 3. Miss Nash won splendidly from Miss Grigg to set Wanganui-Manawatu on the way to victory. Miss Nash, unusually, was well astray with her drives and had to make some spectacular approaches. Miss Grigg was always consistent. Both went out in 38, one over scratch. In the second singles Miss Bull, normally a brilliant putter, had five three-putt greens, and went down to Mrs Mangan, 3 and 2. Both, indeed, had difficulty with their putting but drove long and accurately. Miss Buchanan had Canterbury’s only singles win, in a close match. Her opponent, Mrs Henderson, kept the match alive throughout before Miss Buchanan won 1 up. A most promising young player. Miss Binning impressed with her 3 and 2 win over Mrs Curry. Relaxed, almost casual, she achieved great length from the tees. At 19 years of age, she has a bright future.
Tile New Zealand Press Association reports the following results:— Foursomes Mrs W. Mangan and Mrs R. Laugeson beat Miss S. Grigg and Miss P. Bull, 2 and 1. Miss A. Nash and Mrs D.
