Iron And Steel Industry
Sir, —The Labour Government is again contemplating heavy expenditure in establishing an iron smelting works in New Zealand. Some years ago, if my memory has not let me down, during the late Mr Peter Fraser’s term of office, the Government took over, by compulsion, at considerable goodwill expense, a private concern known, I believe, as the Onekaka iron works. The late Mr D. Sullivan took a prominent part in the matter. The works then carried on for a short time, but were not a success and were abandoned. Before closing down, to complete the fiasco, the Government also took over a large adjoining area, supposedly rich in iron. The cost was many thousands of pounds, but it was later stated it was found the rich deposit of iron was not in evidence and had been overestimated. The total loss was some hundred thousand pounds. —Yours, etc., MEMORY HOLD THE DOOR. July 18, 1960.
