RHODESIAN FEARS

Support Urged For Katanga

(Rec. 11 p.m.) SALISBURY (Southern Rhodesia), July 18. Fearing “another Korea,” copper miners and businessmen of the Rhodesian copperbelt, which borders Katanga province, have made representations to the Government of Northern Rhodesia for early recognition of the independent Katanga State. The copperbelt member of the territory’s Legislative Council, Mr Jerry Steyn, asked the Governor, Sir Evelyn Home, to plead personally with the British Prime Minister, Mr Macmillan, and explain the gravity of the situation. American Associated Press reported.

Mr Steyn claimed that unless Katanga and its new Premier are recognised within the next few days, there will be a holocaust involving not only Katanga, but the Rhodesian copperbelt and even S'mth Africa in the next few years.

“Nothing will stop the inevitable march of international communism if it once steps in directly into the Congo, as the Soviet Premier has warned he will." Mr Stevn said. He interviewed Sir Evelyn Home in Lusaka on Saturday and told him he feared “another Korea might develop” in the Congo unless the West took decisive action.
