Study Of Harbour Facilities
The "great wastage” caused by machinery and other facilities at harbours not being used to capacity was the subject of a memorandum from the Associatea Chambers of Commerce received by the Canterbury chamber s council last evening. It was necessary to New Zealand’s economy that ships be turned round as soon as possible, and to achieve this harbour boards installed expensive equipment which speeded up work while it was used, but in so many cases it lay idle, the memorandum said. It asked all chambers of commerce in port centres to study their local harbour facilities, and associated problems of the free flow of goods, and forward a report to the associated chambers, the aim being to achieve greater utilisation of available facilities. The memorandum was referred to the chamber’s transport committee for investigation.
