Trentham Trials Give Little Help

•'The Press** Special gennee

; • WELLINGTON, July 7. The work at Treatham this morning was the least informative of final trials leading up to the opening of a Wellington meeting for the last 15 years. Not only was there little schooling, but the best triallsts on the flat were hard pressed to record anything like respectable times, even allowing for the heavy nature of the trial grass where the galloping took place. Fair Filou, The Chief and Phoenecian are ready for bold efforts in the Whyte Handicap, : and Airephelia also did well in preparation for the same event The only schooling over country was by Valleydale, Gold Legend and Patrick Molloy. The effort was only over one ; fence—as a warm-up for a trial ■on the flat. Some Tiki. County and Big Chief did well over hurdles. On the trial grau Fair Filou (Jury) was half a length in front of The Chief (Wyatt) after running six furlongs in Imln 21 4-ssec, the ’ last four in 54 3-ssec and the final three in 38 2-Mec. Fair Filou has not reproduced his i best lately, but his performance ’ this morning left little doubt that he is ready to make his presence felt at the Wellington meeting. The Chief has shown his ability I in heavy ground in the north and will have conditions to his liking in the Whyte Handicap. The best half-mile was credited Phoenician (Wyatt) which skipped through the going to record 51 3-siec. He came the final three furlongs in 33 1-Ssec. Phoenician has a, consistent record In the north and previously has done well at Trentham. Firenze (Wyatt) began easily from the five furlongs but he increased the pace when Airephelia (Jury) joined him at the half-mile. Airephelia had an advantage of two i lengths at the post in 33 3-ssec, the final three furlongs taking 3D 2-Ssec. Al Capone (Jury) completed pacework by running the last three furlongs in 41 2-ssec, good work for a steeplechaser. El Jildi (Wyatt) beat Great Seal (Dixon) by a length at the end of six furlongs in Imln 23sec. They travelled fast early, but were slowing toward the end. the last halfmile taking 56 2-ssec. and the final three furlongs 42 l-ssec. £2 Jildi. with better luck in the running than he has experienced lately, could cause an upset In the Te Aro Hack Handicap. The hurdler. Musketeer (Hastings), ran the last seven furlongs of a mile in Imln 36 4*ssec, coming from the half-mile leisurely la M l Eeec. In SolM CeaSHtioa Mama Mia (Hastings), which Impressed by her solid condition, did not extend henelf while running half a mile In 56 l-ssec. the fastest part being the final three furlongs in 41 2-Ssee. She has been racing consistently. The jumpers Lochgair (Simpson) and Peter Keith (Turnwald) were associated In a working gallop, the last seven furlongs of which took Imln diiec. and the final thraa 44 l-Ssec. Peter Keith, looking the better conditioned, was a length In front at the finish. Golden Cabana (Hastings) ran seven furlong, in Imln 36see. He picked up Sharvene (Mackie) at the five furlongs and they finished on terms after running the last half-

mile in 53 3-ssec and the final three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Restricted to little better than three-quarter pace Climbing (Mudgway) recorded 58sec for half a mile, the final three furlongs taking 42 2-ssec. He was successful at Avondale last week and Is likely to be one of the favourites for the Stewards* Handicap. , Klrklea (Parkinson) left three furlongs behind in 40sec. She looks well, but is not reliable.
