ENGLAND BATS FIRST
Vital Third Test Against S.A. (Rec. 11 pjn.) LONDON, July 7. Rain may influence the result of the third England-South Africa test which began today at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. England won the toss and batted. Nine years ago rain helped South Africa to gain its only test victory at Trent Bridge over England. The forecast this morning was for showers and fresh winds. Already two down in the series, the South Africans need to win the match to keep the series alive. The team manager, Dudley Nourse, reminded his players of this in a special pre-match talk last night and urged the team to make a special effort South Africa are playing Pothecary, a medium-paced bowler, to replace G. Griffin, who will not bowl again on the tour because of the calls against him for “throwing." Teams:—
