Nelson Railway

Sir, —I see that “The Press” editorially now has the cost of the Nelson trunk rail link up to “about £2O million.” For you the sky is apparently the limit. You are outbidding your collaborator, Mr J. K. McAlpine, by nearly £2 million. Yet the Ministry of Works, which is in possession of the facts, some of which Mr McAlpine very rightly says he is "ignorant” about, and which is objectively skilled in estimating railway construction costs, says the line will cost about £10.3 million to build. The point for the people to note about this editorial irresponsibility is that much of your other argument pretending to show why the line should not be built bears the same specious hallmark and can be 11 similarly discounted. You have no basis for your claim except wild guesswork, which shows how the standard of editorial responsibility in "The Presss” has deteriorated.— Yours, etc, , DIESEI Nelson, July 5, 1960.
