NEW STOREMEN’S AWARD
Increases of about 7s a week in minimum award rates, which now incorporate the effect of last year’s 24 per cent, general wage order, are granted in a new storemen’s and packers’ aw’ard, retrospective to May 1. New weekly minimum rates for adult workers are £l2 10s, and £l2 14s for workers in drug stores or drug departments of warehouses. The rates for workers under 21 range from £3 15s a week for youths under 16 to £9 for youth of 20.
The new wage rate for casual workers (those employed for less than a week) is 6s 3d an hour. A minimum of four hours’ wages must be paid when casual workers are employed.
A new provision in the award is that in establishments where shifts are worked, storemen and packers may be employed oh shift work under the same conditions as apply to other workers in the establishment, provided that an allowance of not less than 5s a shift be paid.
