Capet Falls In June Steeples At Hastings

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, July 3. Capet, the favourite, was eliminated by another horse at the stand double a round from home in the June Steeplechase at Hastings on Saturday when the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club concluded its winter meeting.

Glengairn fell at the first of the double and after regaining his feet he collided with Capet, causing him to fall at the second of the double. Capet was well within call of the leaders at the time and going particularly well. The race was won by the littlefanced Court Jester (an aged full brother to Red Jester) which W. Young trains for Mr C. G. Jones (owner of the Derby winner Sol d'Or) and Mr H. J. Leech. Capet was ridden by his trainer W. J. Hillis who scratched Tadpole for the race and started him in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles in which he finished second. Tadpole was weU tied up by the sticky ground and had no chance with the winner True Cavalier. The Takanini four-year-old Action Packed, runner-up on the first day, proved a worthy favourite to win the Te Mata Handicap first leg of the T.A.B. double. Ridden by R. J. Jury, Action Packed made a smart forward move from the half-mile to join issue with the leaders at the home turn and in the last furlong was not unduly pressed to hold off a challenge from Port Wine and beat him comfortably. Action Packed is engaged in the principal middle distance handicaps on the second and third days of the Wellington winter meeting and in his present form he looks likely to be one of the favourites. Mama Mia. at double-figure odds, won the second leg, the Longlands Handicap from the second favourite Land which prejudiced his chance by a slow beginning. He was a long way back at the half-mile and then failed only by a head to catch Mama Mia after a tense struggle over the concluding furlong. The double dividend for Action Packed and Mama Mia was £52 5s fid for £l. True Cavalier made an exhibition of the field which opposed him in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles. He went to the front from the start and for the concluding round ran well clear of the others, giving a bold display of jumping and winning by a big margin from Tadpole and Lord Pilate. This was True Cavalier’s third consecutive win as a hurdler and he looks likely to race prominently at the Wellington meeting. The weather was fine and sunny and the track was heavy and very holding. There was a good attendance. On-course investments amounted to £61,227 10s, an increase of £6329 10s. The total for the meeting was £115.429 10s, an increase of £8224 10s.
