CYCLING M. WILDERMOTH WINS CATIONS ROSE BOWL

Apart from a steady wind, conditions on Saturday were good for the cycling clubs’ weekly races. The cash riders competed for the H. Cations Rose Bowl over 34 miles on a block course at Halswell. The three amateur clubs combined for 40 mile graded scratch races at Yaldhurat. The field lor this race was depleted because the top five rider* of the Christchurch club were away at Levin taking part in the national Hope Gibbons shield event. CASH CODE Twenty-six riders started In the H. Cations Rose Bowl handicap event. The race was over a block of 17 miles with the riders making two circuits. The scratch riders gave the limit riders, F. Johnston and D. Randle, 25 minutes. Randle was late in getting on to his mark and left just more than a minute behind Johnston. After a little more than one circuit of the course Randle withdrew. At the end of the first circuit, C. Willcox and H. Cations led. Riding from the 30-mlnute mark, these two had passed th* limit rider* and, entering the second lap, were a quarter of a minute ahead of them. Going round the course for the second time the bunches began to link up and quite a distance from the finish the field, with the exception of the scratch bunch, was together. About a mile from the finish, G. Milner slipped the field but the other* were soon up with him. Later M. Wildermoth jumped into the lead and rode determinedly to give no ground and won seven seconds clear of R. Harrison. Harrison and R. Lucas had a great dual for second place with Harrison gaining the decision by inches. Harrison's ride gave him, apart from second place, both junior and senior fastest times. E. McCann was unlucky to puncture in the concluding stages of the race.

Painter (Avon) made an attempt to break away but did not succeed. Nearing the finish. L. Manners, with 150 yards to go, led out for a long sprint and held on to the finish. He was two lengths clear of J. Swanston (Christchurch). A similar distance back came B. Hack (Papanui), who came out of the bunch to take third place from his clubmate. R. Mann.
