SOVIET TEAM OF 300

Selection For Rome Olympics (NJZ, Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 2. The Soviet Union is sending more than 300 men and women athletes to Rome next month to compete in 19 of the 21 events at the Olympic Games, a Soviet Olympic official said today. He predicted they will win most of the prizes, American Associated Press reported. The vice-president of the Soviet Olympic Committee, Mr Mikhail Peslyak, quoted by Moscow Radio, said: “U.S. supremacy ended way back in Helsinki. Melbourne reaffirmed the new balance of forces in the Olympics. I do not think that Soviet sportsmen will yield in Rome the positions they have won.” Mr Peslyak said that in track and field events he expects strong competition from Britain, the United States. Hungary, the joint German team, Poland, Rumania and Italy. In gymnastics, he noted, Japan is still the Soviet Union’s nearest rival. Mr Peslyak said he thought less of the Soviet chances in swimming, rowing, sailing and equestrian events. The Russians do not play field hockey and their Soccer team was eliminated in the preliminaries. They are entered for all other events in the Olympics.
