WASHDYKE STEEPLES
Sarkey Beats Rivals .Sarkey took his Atf6plechasing record to two wins and a second from three starts when he led throughout in the Timaru Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Washdyke on Saturday. Sarkey kept up a strong gallop in front all the way, and his dashing jumping helped him to draw away by eight lengths from Pearly Gate, an? acceptor for the hack ateeples at Trentkam next Saturday. Sarkey started his steeplechasing. career with a second* to Le Rof at Waimate in May. Three weeks later he won easily at Oamaru. Sarkey Was in front before the first fence and Baby Toes, Persia, Dayus, and Saltash were closest to him early. After the first round Sarkey led by two lengths from the stablemates Persia and Cock Crow. Dayus was then handy, but he belted the stand fence hard and dropped back. Pearly Gate, about fifth there, ranged up alongside Cock Crow after jumping the boards near the seven furlongs. Van Da Hum hit hard there and dropped back beaten, and Persia showed signs of tiredness soon after. He was dropping back : in the field when he fell heavily at the fence near the half-mile.
Sarkey then led by three lengths from Pearly Gate and Cock Crow, and Baby Toes was making ground in a gap of five lengths. Pearly Gate was a clear second closer to home, but did not have Sarkey in any bother. The Sir Galloway gelding widened his lead from the last fence and won easily. Pearly Gate beat Baby Toes by three lengths for second. Baby Toes cut Cock Crow out of third about 50 yards from the post. Van Da Hum was fifth in a gap and was followed home by Tut Tut, Saltash, Dayus, Chief Cashier. Grey Valley, and Steel Blade.
