Fight On Cliff Ledge
(Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 2. In a wild struggle on a narrow rock ledge 10ft below the edge of The Gap—a famous suicide spot—last night, four men risked their lives to save a man from plunging over the 200 ft cliff. Mr William Anthony Mead, aged 20, of Camperdown, said he and a taxi-driver saw the man, aged about 30, behaving queeriy. They saw him climb through the safety fence and suddenly go over the edge. “He rolled down three ledges and then seemed to be half stunned,” said Mr Mead. “We climbed down after him and then he began to fight,” Mr Mead said. Police Sergeants M. Harrison and K. Pethith saw the three men struggling on the ledge. They climbed down and as the five of them struggled they were in danger of rolling over the edge. The policemen finally handcuffed the man.
