MANGANESE AND WHEAT
The Department of Agriculture is looking into the effect of manganese deficiency on wheat yields in a series of trials. One of these trials is on the property of Mr D. B. Thomas at Rokeby in Mid-Canterbury. In the last two seasons manganese deficiency has shown up in crops in this area on the south bank of the Rakaia river. On Mr Thomas’s farm 12 plots of Aotea sown at the end of May are being subjected to four treatments—an application of two tons of lime, 101 b of manganese sulphate, lime and manganese sulphate together at the same weights, with an untreated control plot. Mr E. Delahunty, farm advisory officer at the Department of Agriculture, said this week that it was hoped to find out what response there was to added manganese and whether lime had the effect of accentuating the deficiency. The lime will be applied as soon as possible and the manganese in the spring.
