Tar Boy First, Caduceus Fifth In Yonkers Event

IN.Z. Prist Association—Copyngnt) NEW YORK, June 30. Tar Boy won the 25,000 dollars “International Encore’’ pace at Yonkers Raceway tonight. New Zealand’s Caduceus, with an American driver behind him for the first time, finished fifth. Tar Boy, added to the "Encore” field when Canada’s Mighty Dudley was withdrawn after the three 50,000-dollars International Races, won by a length from Bye Bye Byrd, with Speedy Pick third in an all-American finish.

. Caduceus** new driver, W. Haughton, replacing New Zealand’s J, D. Litten who baa left for home, kept Caduceus in third place on the rails for most of the way, and was unable to find an opening to challenge. Tar Boy. the newcomer to the field, led from the first quarterfurlong post and kept the lead quite safely Byfi Bye Byrd tried to challenge early but was beaten off He came again at the finish. Champ Volo tried to stay up with the leading bunch, racing one wide. He compounded after -the turn Into the straight and finished last. The time for the first quarter* mile was 29 3-ssec. Caduceus had a hand in making this fast time as for a short while he battled with Tar Boy for the lead Haughton then pulled him back to trail on the fence behind the leader. Tar Boy started at a surprisingly short 7/2. Bye Bye Byrd was 3/1 and Speedy Pick 11/1, Caduceus was 3/1. Widower Creed was the favourite at 9/5. He finished fourth. The order of finish was; Tar Boy, Bye Bye Byrd, Speedy Pick, Widower Creed, Caduceus. O’Brien Hanover, Champ Veto. The quarter times were 29 3-ssec, 59 3-ssec. Imin 30 3-ssec. and Imin 59 2-ssec. Tar Boy paid nine dollars and 50 cents for a two-dollar win stake. He paid four dollars and 90 cents for ’’place” (second) and three dollars and 90 cents for ‘'show" (third). Bye Bye Byrd paid five dollars and 50 cents for place and three dollars and 90 cents for show. Speedy Pick paid, six dollars and 10 cents for show.

Tar Boy won by a length. Two and three-quarter lengths separated second and third. Tar Boy was added to the field for tonight's “Encore" after the withdrawal of Canada’s Mighty Dudley. Tar Boy had not raced in any of the three ’’lnternationals." Caduceus had finished fourth in the first of the 50.000-dollars ''lnternational" races over 12 furlongs, and' third in the second event, over 16 furlongs. Last week's event, ip which he deadheated for first but was disqualified was over a mile.
