TO STUDY IN U.S.

To further his studies in physical education, Mr P. E. Smith, physical education teacher at Riccarton High School for the last two years, has resigned from his position and on August 16 will leave New,Zealand to attend the University of Oregon for a three-year course. Mr Smith, who may be better known as the New Zealand senior quarter-mile title-holder in 1956, is taking this step on his own initiative and without the assistance of a bursary or scholarship.

Mr Smith’s main interest in physical education lies in athletics, and he is particularly keen on doing research into physical education through a tests and measurements subject which he will be taking at. the university. The university’s star athlete is D. Burleson, recognised as one of America’s best milers.
