LAWN TENNIS Misses Bueno, Reynolds In Singles Final
(S2. Press Association—Copyripht) LONDON, July 1. The defending champion, Miss Maria Bueno, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Miss Sandra Reynolds, of Bloemfontein, South Africa, will battle out the Wimbledon women’s singles final tomorrow. Before, a capacity centre court crowd yesterday, the lithe, sallow-skinned Brazilian staved off a late rally by Miss Christine Truman, the idol of British tennis enthusiasts, to win decisively 6-0, 5-7, 6-1, in 69 minutes after a scintillating fight.
Miss Reynolds came back from the brink of defeat to beat another British international, the lefthanded Miss Ann Haydon, and became the first South African woman to reach the final. She is only the second South African singles finalist at Wimbaldon since Brian Norton played "Big Bill" Tilden in the last round of the 1922 men’s event. Miss Reynolds won 8-3, 2-6, 6-4, in 77 minutes after Miss Haydon had lad 4-2 with service to follow in the deciding set. Miss Bueno began with two double faults but then turned on a devastating display of powerful serving, tremendous smashing..and incisive volleying, which reduced a nervous Miss Truman to impotence. But her early triumph brought about a reaction and it was the Brazilian’s turn to waver. She served three double-faults and was four times taken to deuce before holding her service at the start of the second set She never really got going and Miss Truman won 7-5. But in the third set Miss Bueno picked up the rhythm of her powerful stroking again, and swept back into the attack. She rampaged her way irresistibly through the next five games to win. The other semi-final was in striking contrast to this serve-and-volley encounter. It was largely a duel of raking low drives, with Miss Reynolds showing the surer touch off the ground to counter Miss Haydon’s vigorous net attack in the later stages. As in her quarter-final against Miss Darlene Hard, she dropped the second set but went on to ■win the last set without much effort The centre court crowd saw the most thrilling match of the
fortnight when two teenagers, D. Ralston, the United States junior champion, and R. Orsuna, a Mexican student at a Californian university, reached the final of the men’s doubles. After a battle lasting just over three hours they beat the number two seeds, the Australians, R. Laver and R. Mark. Ralston and Orsuna won 4-8, 10-8, 15-13, 4-6, 11-9, in the longest match in this year’s championships to ensure a unique final between non-seeded players. Ralston and Orsuna, who had previously defeated the Italian fourth-seeded pair, Pietrangeli and Simla, played some' brilliant tennis—enthralling for the crowd to watch but hardly the best of work-outs for Laver, in view of his singles final today. The youngsters had nine match points for the final set before they finally settled the issue, and Mark saved eight of them with some tremendous serving. On the last one, however, Mark put a shot into the net, and the crowd rose to winners and losers alike in a great ovation. Results (• indicates seeded players) were: WOMEN'S SINGLES Holder: Miss M.
