PRESIDENT’S REPORT

European Doubts “Unanswered” NEW YORK, June 30. The “New York Times” chief London i correspondent. Drew Middleton, reported yesterday that President Eisenhower’s report to the nation on Monday night apparently has failed to answer European doubts about the vigour and realism of United States leadership of the West. Middleton reported that generally newspapers in Europe had paid little attention to the speech and said: “This press treatment contrasted sharply with that in the past, when the President’s speeches were given prominence.” , “New York Times” correspondents in Allied and neutral capitals had reported that although United States pre-eminence in the West was still acknowledged, principally on material grounds. American prestige had been reduced. Middleton said: I "This is ascribed to the series of events beginning with the United States U-2 spy plane incident in the Soviet Union and ending with the cancellation of the President’s visit to Japan. “Diplomatic sources in London and qualified sources in Paris emphasised that the doubts cast on United States leadership by these events had also emphasised its importance to the West and the absence of any adequate substitute. “In Paris it was suggested that there was need for consolidation of loyalties under more surefooted leadership in Washington,” he said.
