ATTACK ON PRESIDENT

Rockefeller’s Claims GLACIER PARK( Montana). June 30. New York State’s Governor (Mr Nelson Rockefeller), defending his right to criticise the Eisenhower Administration, said he would make a "realistic” decision on supporting the Republican Presidential candidate and plaform when he saw how they compared with his views. Governor Rockefeller told a press conference that while he expected to be able to support Vice-President Richard Nixon, he would be “silly” to lose his “flexibility and mobility” in advance of the Republican convention. Mr Rockefeller, who withdrew from the Presidential race Jast December, said the matter of Administration dollar limitations entered into his differences with President Eisenhower on defence policy. The Governor read a prepared statement replying to a charge by Republican Governor Cecil Underwood of West Virginia, who said Mr Rockefeller “displayed political cowardice” in attacking the Administration after pulling out of the Presidential race. Governor Rockefeller said every Governor had the right and the obligation to speak out on national issues He regretted “that Mr Underwood himself did not see fit to join others in publicly debating” Mr Rockefeller’s views at Tuesday’s business session of the annual Governors* conference at Glacier Park.
