Mr C. A. McFarlane,- DirectorGeneral of the Post Office, retired yesterday after 42 years’ service. The Postmaster-General (Mr Moohan), at a function in Wellington made him a presentation on behalf of the staff of the Post Office throughout New Zealand.—(P.A.) Mr S. W. Smith, member of Parliament for Hobson, will enter hospital in Auckland on Sunday for an operation.—(P.A.) « Professor K. E. Bullen, formerly lecturer in mathematics at Auckland University and now professor of applied mathematics at the University of Sydney, has been elected a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The foreign membership of this academy, which was founded in 1779, is limited to 250, and covers all countries of the world in the field of the arts, literature, law and the sciences. Professor Bullen is the only New Zealander on the list of foreign members.—(P.A.) Mr R. F. Shepard was appointed the Heathcote County Council’s representative or) the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council last evening.

Mr J. S. C. Thomas, manager of the Rangiora branch of the Australia and New Zealand Bank. Ltd., retired recently after more than 46 years' service. He joined the former Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., nt Christchurch, in 1914. He was appointed accountant at the Blenheim branch in 1952. In 1941 he was appointed manager of the Greym lu-li branch, and five years later assumed the management of the Rangiora branch. Mr Tbnma- has been succeeded by Mr R. J Hogan, who has been mana~er of the bank's branch at Lautoka Fiji, since 1957. Mr C. N Irvine has been a-> pointed editor of the New Zealand Law Reports ana the Zealand Law Journal.” He succeeds Mr P Kavanagh, who retired from the post after 30 vears' service to the legal profession. Mr A. M. W. Greig has been aopointed a member of the Citrus Canker Adv’sorv Committee He replaces Mr R G Hamilton .
