USE OF BIRCH RECOMMENDED
Youths On Carnal Knowledge Counts (Hew ZeaVontT Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 30. "The use of the birch would be a real deterrent in cases such as these,” Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., said in the Magistrate’s Court at Dunedin today when he sentenced three youths to imprisonment on carnal knowledge charges. They were Robert James Wilson, aged 18, a railway porter, Barry John Garland, aged 17, an apprentice fitter, and Douglas Joseph Broderick, aged. 17. a woollen mill worker.
Perhaps some day, legislation would recognise the use of the birch to straighten out the “kink” in juvenile society, said the Magistrate. The youths had no right to take advantage of girls, even though they might be willing and encourage the offence, said the Magistrate. He said that he was probably one of the few who thought that the use of the birch would be a real deterrent. Each youth was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each of the charges—two against Wilson,. four against Garland and two against Broderick—the terms to be concurrent All the accused were placed on probation, for 12 months.
