TROTTING Progeny Of New Sires Ran With Distinction

Three sires—My Chief, Garrison Hanover and Stormyway—followed U. Scott and Hal Tryax on the basis of stakes won by three-year-olds ’ this season. All three were represented'for a first time by horses in this age group.

My Chief Owes his place on the list mainly to the efforts of Sun Chief, ranked as the top three-year-old of the season. This grand youngster failed to win the New Zealand Derby Stakes, being beaten by a .short length by Stormont.

Sun ’Chief had missed a lot of work through an injury and in the circumstances his effort was full of merit. Subsequently he went on to race with distinction in open handicap events, winning the Hattray Handicap and finishig third to Fourth Edition and Guiseppe in the Easter Cup at Addington before going to Sydney where he won a heat and the final of the New South Wales Pacers’ Derby. Sun Chief contributed £3390 of the £4435 won by the progeny of My Chief in New Zealand, while he also won £3375 in Sydney; When first he was imported to New Zealand by Mr A. Boston,"of Oamaru, My Chief was lightly patronised. He served only 25 This is the third, of a series Of articles discussing the successes of three-year-old pacers and trotters during the present season. The final article will appear tomorrow.

mares in his first season and 14 live foals resulted. Of them two are understood to have died. So from 12 foals he had four starters and three of them won races, Kingsdown Patch winning three times and Faru once.

His only other starter was My Daisy, which failed in a nontotalisator race at Kurow at her only appearance. My Chief is certain to be more extensively patronised in the future and his progeny are certain to be keenly sought in Australia where Sun Chief was hailed as a future champion after his wins at Harold Park. The record of My Chief's progeny this season is:—

Sound Record Garrison Hanover, which was imported by the late Mr L. M. Denton, had a most successful season, his progeny winning 15 races, placing him second to U. Scott on the basis of races won. Garrison Hanover served 62 mares in his first season at the stud in New Zealand and there were 45 live foals, of which 10 started this season. Seven of them won races, and one recorded placings. His two unplaced representatives were Trumped, which had three starts, arjd Implore, whicl>. had _njne. His biggest winner, was Sally Boy, which had four wins and five placings from" 13 starts. Sally Boy was desperately unlucky on more than one occasion, otherwise his record would have been much better. He showed brilliant speed at times and was rated little inferior v: to Sun Chief by ’most critics.

The majority of Garrison Hanover’s representatives raced in slow-class handicap events and consequently their earnings were not very great. The record of Garrison Hanover’s three-year-olds is:—

Sired Derby Winner Like Garrison Hanover, the Volomite horse, Stormyway, imported by Mr J. M. Connolly, of Orari, had seven individual winners. Three other of his progeny earned place money, while five failed to'earn any money. Volomite, the sire of Stormyway and Flying Song, has gained fame in New Zealand through the deeds of Light Brigade, which with U Scott and Dillon Hall, has dominated the sires’ list in New Zealand for the last 12 years. Light Brigade was regarded as a comparative failure at the stud in his first few seasons, and his oldest progeny were well on in their four-year-old season before they did anything of note. It could well be that the progeny of Stormyway and Flying Song will. require age before the best is seen of them. Stormyway was widely patronised on his arrival in New Zealand and in his first season he served 66 mares and had 45 live foals. Stormyway’s first crop showed great promise, but it was not until last November when Stormont won the New Zealand Derby Stakes in the record time of 3min 11 4-ssec and Calumite raced prominently that he began to assert much influence on the racing scene. The record of Stormyway’s three-year-olds is:—
