Kastanea Fit For Race At Washdyke

The stablemates Kastanea and Kelp ran the fastest mile of the training at Riccarton yesterday in their final trials for engagements at Washdyke. Gay Tommy shaped well in a solo mile, his last gallop before the Donald Grant Memorial, and McCool sprinted attractively, showing his fitness for the Seadown Handicap.

Galloping was done wide out on the course proper on ground that was cutting out slightly but gave very good winter going.

Kelp (B. W. McDonald) worked away easily from the mile and a quarter and quickened when Kastanea (G. Baldwin) joined in at the mile, Kastanea reached a short lead inside the furlong, and won a good gallop by a length. Kastanea rah the mile in Imin 48 l-ssec and the last half in 53 2-ssec.

The way he has shaped in training lately Kastanea must be given a good chance in the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke. Gay Tommy (C. T. Wilson) recorded Imin 49 2-ssec for his mile—a good solo trial. He ran the first half mile keenly in 54 Shoal (C. McDonald), Kalan (V. C. Clydesdale), and Zayton (P. H. Jones) were abreast finishing a mile in imin 50 2-ssec, the last half mile in 54 3-ssec. Shoal is top weight and Kalan is one of the light-weights in the Donald Grant Memorial at Washdyke. Solo Mile Fair Catch (W. Beck), another Donald Grant Memorial candidate, ran from the mile in Imin 52 4-ssec. He was in no hurry early, going at little more than three-quarter pace for the first half mile. Then he spritzed home in 53 l-ssec. • i Navarone <P. Graham) also ran his mile in Imin 52 4-ssec. He finished half a length ahead of his stablemate Offend (L. McGuire) after running the last mile in 54 l-ssec. They have engagements at Washdyke but are not certain starters.

Balance (A. J. Stokes) and Kaseno (W. Hanlln) shaped well for hacks over a mile. They ran the distance in Imin 49 4-ssec,

and the last half mile in 54 l-ssec. Balance will race on the flat at Washdyke, and as a hurdler at the Wellington winter meeting. . The Invercargill-trained Melodic (R. B. Taggart) ran his mile in Imin 52sec, and the last half mile in 53 2-ssec. His next race will be the Whyte Handicap at Trentham next week. Saltash (N. Cowles) and Kaikuri (K. Quayle) ran the last half of a leisurely mile in 58sec. Thumper (B. W. McDonald) ran the last half of a mile in 54 4-ssec. Crystal Light (G. Baldwin) joined him for the last five furlongs, and stayed alongside to the end. Garbett (R. L. Browning) also worked over a mile, and ran the last half in 56sec. Cheroot (R. J. Blair) was running clear of Flagon (R. B. Taggart) finishing seven furlongs in Imin 36 2-ssec, the last half mile in 56 3-ssec. Topa (T. McGill) followed them in a small gap from the start. Well Clear Carrageen <P. H. Jones) easily outran his stablemate. High Treasure (P. Graham), over six furlongs. He finished six lengths clear in Imin 23 l-ssec, the last half mile taking sfisec. Coral Ring (C. T. Wilson) worked away from the mile and ran the last half in 54 4-ssec. He shaped like an early winner at Ashburton, where he was second to Supreme Effort after a slow start. Ashleigh (W. Beck) and Roa (A. H. East wood) did well to run half a mile in 52 l-ssec. High Score (P. Graham) led Luv and Ducks (L. McGuire) and Double Impress (R. McDonald) by a length, finishing three furlongs in 41 2-ssec. Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) sprinted six furlongs, the last four in 52 3- He, should be at bis best, or close to it,: for the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke. Royal Duke (M. Wildermoth), the early favourite for the Caroline Handicap, recorded 53 4-5 sec for his half mile. Bodkin (B. W. McDonald) led Robin Hood (M. Wildermoth) over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Bodkin ran greenly at Ashburton. With experience he should be an early winner for J. L. Barr’S stable. McCool (C. McDonald) worked up to speed at the five furlongs and galloped strongly from the half mile in 51 3-ssec. He will be one of Ricearton’s stronger representatives in the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke. Corowa (A. J. Stokes) took 56 l-sseq for his half mile. William David (B. W. McDonald) was a length and a half clear of Mast (C. Clydesdale) after running half a mile in 53 4Last Link (N. Cowles) and Andaman (W. Beck) recorded 42 l-ssec for three furlongs. They started at the half mile.
