MEN CAUGHT BY DOG

Service Station Intruders

(New Zealand Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, June 30. Two men found in the Northern service station at Massey at 2 a.m. today—the thirteenth intrusion on these premises in seven years—received a shotgun reception and were later rounded up by the police dog Duke, with his handler. Constable G. Bracey. One man was found hiding near a culvert and the other surrendered when he realised the dog was on bis tracks. It is understood that a girl waiting in a car nearby was also interrogated. ..The proprietor of the service station, Mr J. S. Smith, found intruders on the premises when he investigated a noise which had awakened him. He grabbed a shotgun and fired several shots as two men ran down the drive to the road. As they ran,* one dropped a rubber glove. The police were called and Constable Bracey arrived with Duke, who sniffed the glove and was then told: "Chase him.” . The dog led Constable Bracey a mile and a half south down the main road, across a clay filling, and to some scrub by a stream. A man emerged and said: “All right” Constable Bracey stopped the dofe and arrested the man. The dog then went down the road in the opposite direction, and a man walked towards the police party and surrendered. This is Duke’s second major capture in a week.
