POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Two Canterbury Awards Two University of Canterbury graduates have been awarded post-graduate scholarships to study overseas. They are Mr Don Locke and Miss Glenys Cropp. Both are first-class honours graduates, Mr Locke in philosophy and Miss Cropp in French. Mr Locke will spend two years at Oxford University studying for a bachelor of philosophy degree, which is' roughly equivalent to a master of arts degree in New Zealand. He was also offered a 2500-dollar a year scholarship at Harvard in the United States, but decided to gb to Oxford. The annual value of his scholarship is £650. Mr Locke, who is an assistant lecturer at the University of Canterbury will leave in August for England. He has no plans for the future other than the possibility that he might go to the Unitedr.Statps and study for a doctorate. Miss Cropp was awarded a scholarship tenable in a British or European university and chose the Sorbonne in Paris. She will also study for two years, to obtain a licence des lettres. , She is at prfesent at Teachers’ College in division C, and will return to New Zealand to teach on completion of her degree. Miss Cropp will also leave in August and go by sea.
