BIG TREE PETROL PUMP
Auckland’s Last Disappears
“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, June 28. The last Big Tree petrol pump has just disappeared from Auckland—although the brand has not been sold in New Zealand for nearly 30 years.
The pump was at the Ferry Petrol Station, in Quay street. One other—at the Carlton Service Station—was taken out about three weeks ago. There are still a number of the pale blue Big Tree pumps with the distinctive kauri tree trademark scattered about New Zealand.
Some petrol stations have kept them for partly sentimental reasons—and by keeping a few pumps in service the brand name has been kept alive. But the petrol they contain is Shell—the company that bought out A. S. Paterson, Ltd., the distributors of Big Tree petrol. Big Tree petrol disappeared when big companies began bulk imports. Previously petrol had been imported in four-gallon tins.
