Army “Strong Enough”

The Indian Prime Minister, Mr Nehru, said today that India's armed forces were “strong enough” to defend the country’s borders.

He told a press conference that there was “obviously a large build-up” of Chinese forces in Tibet, reaching up to India’s frontiers.

Talks in Peking between Indian and Chinese officials about the border dispute were proceeding, but in a preliminary stage. Mr Nehru said The Prime Minister said he could not draw a line showing in what parts of Tibet the Chinese troops were concentrated. The Army Chief of Staff, General K. S. Thimayya, had said there was a build-up on some parts of the border.
