SEISMIC WAVE DAMAGE

Observations At

Estuary

The extent and nature of the scouring caused by the sea as it surged in and out of the Estuary during the recent seismic waves had not yet been determined, said Mr E. F. Scott, the chief engineer (planning), in his report to the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. But it had been noted that the bar seemed to have been so scoured that there wpre no waves breaking where previously there was always a line of breakers. Sand had been scoured from the spit and from the higher sandbanks within the Estuary mouth, and appeared to have been deposited further up the Estuary opposite Fisherman’s Flat.
