DERAILED ENGINE
Replacement On
Track
The engine of the train that was derailed at Chaneys corner on the night of June 10, will be lifted back on to the line today. Two 40-ton cranes, one specially brought from Dunedin, will lift the engine, which weighs nearly 60 tons, on to the track. The operation will start about 10 a.m., after the rail-car to Picton has passed. If everything functions smoothly, the engine will be on the line by noon. It will then be towed to Belfast where it will be dismantled, loaded on to trucks and taken to the workshops at Hillside, just outside Dunedin. A decision will then be made as to whether it will be reassembled. This will depend on the damage which is thought tq be extensive. The cranes will be supported by steel out-riggers anchored to heavy timber beams already in position alongside the track. The rest of the trucks and the tender have been removed and are now in the workshops being repaired.
