Magistrate’s Court Young Women Idle And Disorderly At Lyttelton

Noeline Bradley, aged 27, and Irene Elizabeth Pullen, aged 18, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to charges of being idle and disorderly at Lyttelton. They were remanded In custody by Mr Raymond Ferner, SM., to June 27 for sentence.

Sergeant T. A. A. Marson said that Bradley was found in the Saxon Hotel at Lyttelton after being seen leaving a vessel at Gladstone Pier. She told the constable that she had gone to the ship to see a seaman from whom she had hoped to borrow some money. She had been employed in a factory but was dismissed last month. When arrested she had only 12s l|d in her possession. Referring to the charge against Pullen, Sergeant Marson said that the Lyttelton police were advised that the girl had been missing from her home in Napier since June 16 and was thought to have boarded the African Reefer which had gone to Lyttelton. She was found in a milk bar in Lyttelton and admitted having travelled in the crew’s quarters of the vessel. She had only 13s 7Jd in her possession. “Her parents have had considerable trouble with the girl and have asked the police to take whatever action is necessary in the hope of straightening her up,” said Sergeant Marson. THEFT OF CAR RADIO On a charge of theft of a car radio valued at £2B, the property of Paul Robert Askin, Desmond Robert Campbell, aged 19, a workman, was remanded in custody to June 27. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Marson said the radio was taken from the complainant’s car while it was parked in a dealer’s yard in Burwood road. A man later called at the Central police station to say that he had received a radio from Campbell as deposit on a car body. Campbell was at present on probation for dishonesty. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE A 35-year-old married man, for whom Mr J. N. Matson appeared, was placed on probation for one year when he pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted suicide on June 20. REMANDED On a charge of driving while intoxicated, Lens Gavin Price, aged 43, was remanded on bail to June 26. DISOBEYED GYRATORY SYSTEM Submissions that Edward George Dore had already been punished severely for a series of disorderly offences committed with other youths between Christchurch and Timaru, had lost his driving licence and been sentenced to a month in prison, and that the costa and fines because of the prosecutions had amounted to some £3OO -werp made by his counsel, Mr M. G. L.' Eotighnan. Dore was fined £3 on a charge of failing to comply with the gyratory system in Cathedral square on April 27. Mr Lougbnan said that in view of the heavy fines faced by the defendant any further fines would be difficult to extract from him. The view that the traffic regulation permitting commercial vehicles to double park for several minutes while. goods were loaded or unloaded was “very much abused’ was expressed by the Magistrate. He was hearing a charge against Thomas David Barwick of stopping his car on the offside of another stopped vehicle in the. city. The defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was fined £3. Mr S. H. Wood, for the defendant, said he had had to pick up a 481 b load in his car and it would have been impossible for him to park any distance away from the premises. / The regulations made it clear that stopping or standing of a vehicle outside another stopped vehicle was prohibited, said the Magistrate. “Commercial vehicles can and do make use of their exemption from thia, regulation and I have no doubt that it is much abused by these drivers —one finds them Stopped for long periods in pir-» cumstances where they cannot possibly be engaged in delivering goods.” he said. The defendant’s car, however, was not a commercial vehicle and it was thus double barked illegally. "In my view there is far too much double parking and far too much of it is not detected,’*' -the Magistrate said. cburA

ver, Eric Charles Leach, of driving a bus without due care and attention in Cathedral square on April 1 was dismissed. The defendant was represented by Mr W. G. P. Cuningham. Evidence was given that the rear of the bus struck the bumper bar of a car which had been stopped to give way at a pedestrian crossing. The defendant submitted that there were marks only on the tyre of the bus, and that the car must have “drifted’’ in to a position near the rear wheel while the bus was stopped. A charge against William Jarden (Mr A. F. Wilding) of driving a vehicle not specified on his licence was dismissed after defence submissions that a passenger in the car was teaching him to drive. (Before Mr A. P. Blair, S.M.) IMPERSONATED POLICE A 19-year-old youth, who was granted suppression of his name, was discharged without conviction under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act, when he appeared on a charge of impersonating a member of the police force. Sergeant T. A. Marson said that the man impersonated a Detective McLachlan with a view to getting his coat back, which he had left in a car. The man pleaded guilty. CIVIL CASES (Before Mr A. P.
