FERODO TROPHY TRIAL
26 Cars Compete
In one of the best organised car trials held in Canterbury for many years, 38 cars competed for the Canterbury Car Club’s Ferodo Trophy last Sunday. The trial was organised by the'club president (Mr N. W. Tillman) who is the present Canterbury trials champion. The trial was unusual in that besides the usual skill required in navigation, special driving tests and questionnaires were included
Competitors praised the organisation, which required many weeks of planning and an elaborate system of checkpoints. Only one competitor failed to complete the course, which in itself can be regarded as an outstanding triumph for the organisers. Entries ranged from an old model van to the latest model saloons. The route was not a difficult one, so that few cars, if any arrived back in Christchurch showing signs of the trial apart from a generous coating of mud on the paintwork. The first section of the trial ended near Bennets, the second section at Ashley Gorge, and the third at Okuku after the cars had traversed Lees Valley. Heavy rain in the valley provided plenty of vigorous pushing by crews of those cars without mudgrips. The trial concluded at Waikuku about 6 p.m. Results were:—
C. G. Finney (Ford 300),. 88 points lost, 1; M. A. White-John-son (Vauxhall Velox), 93, 2; D. G. Nicholl (Ford Customline), 122, 3; M. Hannah (Borgward Isabella), 150, 4; T. D. Craig (M.G.A.), 157, 5; L. L. Hayes (Ford Customline), 191, 6; J. Hauschild (Hillman). 207, 7; J. Butts (Morris Minor), 215, 8; B. J. Layburn (Volkswagen), 217, 9; K. B. Turner (Ford VS), 22, 10.
