ICE CREAM ON SUNDAYS
“Desecration,” Says SA. Church
PRETORIA. The Sabbath is being desecrated in Pretoria because children are allowed to buy ice cream on Sundays, according to the council of the Pretoria - Eloffsdal - WonderboomSuid Dutch Reformed Church. The council has objected to Sunday ice cream sales for this reason, and has asked the Pretoria City Council to refuse to issue licences to ice cream firms to sell their products on Sundays. But the City Council’s general purposes committee told the church council to address its objections to the Transvaal provincial authorities instead.
In a letter to the City Council, the church council asked for “co-operation in this serious matter.” Large-scale selling of ice cream on Sundays *®s particularly disturbing because it gave children the opportunity to desecrate the Sabbath, the letter said. It continued: “The alarming factor is that there is thus no longer any distinction for toem between buying ice cream on ordinary days, and on Sundays. It is quite comjnon for them to see and hear ice cream carts on Sunday. It is no wonder that respect for toe Sabbath is becoming blunted, and is even lost completely. church council feels toat the only effective way to ®Sht this evil is to approach toe City Council and ask for Jour help in the matter. The church council therefore asks y°u urgently to refuse to issue to ice cream firms trading licences which give them the Dght to sell ice cream on Bundays.”
