/{shellA FARM FORUM / \ Questions—and ’ answers by experts—for the man on the land. "' WW TJ£§Mi f ,z , Contour ploughing simplified Contour Ploughing Q : Is there any way to make contour ploughing more simple, season after season, fcy defining how the contours should lie? *'• It is a good practise to permanently locate contour guide lines by fence markers. These markers simplify the process of locating and following guide lines in succeeding seasons. The greatest difficulty in contour farming arises when lines are spaced too far apart they should not exceed 100-120 feet. Therefore, if any doubt exists in relation to markers in a few years’ time they should be re-determined. Shell Weedkillers Q : I’ve heard farming friends speaking of the new range of Shell weedkillers. Are they now freely available? Shell, who by the way are the world’s largest suppliers of agricultural chemicals, now have a full new range of modem hormone and chemical weedkillers available to farmers through major suppliers. Your local Shell Agricultural Distributor or Branch can give you informative leaflets about most weed problems and how to meet them with these new Shell Hormone Weedkillers. Tractor Maintenance <l-- Is it really essential to provide shelter or covering for a tractor which is in constant daily use? * ! Any tractor will benefit from sympathetic treatment. Keep it clean if only so that appearance will encourage its preservation. When there is any chance of rain, frost or heavy dew during the night, the tractor should be left under cover, and if that is impossible, it should be placed in a sheltered position and the engine covered with a tarpaulin. The top of the exhaust pipe should be covered to prevent entry of rain. Hormone Weedkillers Q : 1 read ut the newspapers that hormone weedkillers are suspected of being poisonous to livestock. Is this true? *’ weedkillers, sometimes called growth regulators, are based on MCPA, 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, 2,4-DB and MCPB and are harmless to animals and humans. They must, however, as is the case with all agricultural chemicals, be used as shown on the labels to obtain the desired result. /UwuK n,m " •• enother Shell service to termers.
