QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS FOR THREE MEN OF R.N.Z.A.F.

Among recipients of honours in

the Queen’s Birthday list this month were three airmen who have given outstanding service to the Royal New Zealand Air Force. They are Flight Lieutenant W. F. R. Jackson, of -Shelley Bay; Warrant Officer R. T. F. Lewis, of Hornby; and Sergeant H. F. Williams, of Wigram. Flight Lieutenant Jackson and Warrant Officer Lewis have been made Members of the Order of the British Empire; and Avgeant Williams has’been awarded the British Empire MedaL Flight Lieutenant Jackson is the

accountant officer at R.N.Z.A.F. headquarters, Wellington. He joined the Air Force, in aircrew, in 1943. From 1946 until 1954 he was in civilian life when he rejoined the service in the secretarial branch. His award was for his work while adjutant and accounts officer’with No. 41 Transport Squadron in Singapore. He served with the squadron for two years and a half. Warrant Officer Lewis joined the Air Force in 1942, and for the last three years has been in charge of the Woodbourne instrument section.

In 1948 he did outstanding work in conjunction with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in designing the instrumentation for full-scale tests on Sandringham aircraft which at the time were overheating. He also has designed special instrumentation for the Devon aircraft.

Sergeant Williams enlisted with the Air Force in 1939. Three years later he was badly Injured in a bomb blast in Singapore and the following year was invalided from the service. Determined to rejoin the Air Force which he had decided on as a career, he was unable to do so because of sub-standqrd medical reports; however, his persistence was rewarded and he was accepted in 1951. Tbe award to Sergeant Williams is for bis continued work in the maintenance of aircraft parked out in the open in tropical heat. He has recently returned to Wigram after doing a tour of duty with No. 41 squadron in Singapore.
