WIN FOR SARKEY
Steeples At Oamaru
Sarkey’s strong gallop and dashing jumping in the lead gave him an easy win in the Burnside Hade and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Oamaru on Saturday. This was Sarkey’s second race over country, but he was a form runner after being placed at Waimate last month. Sarkey is owned by Mr J, M. Beattie and is trained at Wingatui by H. A Anderton, so is a stablemate of Promise, which won the Oamaru Winter Cup less than an hour before.
Sarkey. a 10-year-old Sir Galloway gelding, was ridden by the trainer’s son, B. J. Anderton. He was alongside his stablemate Sydtrev in the lead for a time but started the last round with a lead of three lengths. Sydtrev was then running second two lengths clear of Hay Time, whose early jumping was patchy. Hay Time was a clear second but three lengths behind Sarkey starting the last six furlongs. Sydtrev was then third and
Napoleon Bonaparte was making ground next just in front of Cock Crow. Le Roi was next, and was not managing to do any better than hold his position. Sarkey drew away to a longer lead after jumping the sod wall near the three furlongs and won coasting by five lengths from Napoleon Bonaparte, which outstayed Hay Time by three lengths. Cock Crow plodded home for fourth two lengths back. He was under pressure for the last half mile.
Le Roi was an undistinguished fifth four lengths back. He found the pace set by Sarkey much too strong on a good track. They all finished. Sir Chat, Tut Tut, Sydtrev, and Grey Valley plodded in at intervals.
