Six New Springboks For First Test

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) PRETORIA, June 18. The South African Rugby Union team for the first test against New Zealand at Johannesburg on Saturday is:— Full-back: R. G. Dryburgh (captain). Three-quarters: Hennie van Zyl, I. A. Kirkpatrick, J. L. Gainsford, M. Antelme. Half-backs: K. Oxlee, R. Lockyear. Forwards: J. A. Nel, Hugo van Zyl, J. T. Claassen, A. Malan, M. Pelser, A. C. Koch, G. Malan, P. S. du Toit.

Dry burgh, a 30-year-old Natal player, not only makes a comeback to international football, but also assumes the captaincy of South Africa.

A. Malan, a young Transvaal player who is one of the six new Springboks, will be vice-captain and will lead the forwards.

The other new Springboks are the wings van Zyl and Antelme, the halves Oxlee and Lockyear. and the number eight forward Nel.

Apart from the six new Springboks, three players—the hooker, A. MAlan, the flanker Pelser and the centre Gainsford—have all appeared in only one test

The front ranker du Toit and the flanker van Zyl have played in two, and several of the others have had limited international experience.

Experience is represented by Koch (who first played test Rugby against New Zealand in South Africa in 1949, and will be equalling “Salty” du Rand’s South African record of 21 tests), Claassen (who will be playing his fourteenth test), Kirkpatrick (with four internationals since 1953) Dryburgh (with seven since 1955), and du Toit

Dryburgh, in the final trial yesterday, landed three penalty goals and three conversions for a personal total of 15 points. He appeared to be past his best when the French team toured South Africa in 1958, but has made a fine come-back and has been unquestionably the best and most accurate full-back in the country.
