Horace (“Go West. Young Man”) Greeley took his own advice. Founder and first editor of the “New. York Tribune” in 1841, a leader in the fight against slavery and a great orator, Greeley became one of the West’s outstanding personalities. He served as a delegate for Oregon at the Republican National Convention in 1860 and ran for President of the United States against Ulysses Grant in 1872. Beaten by Grant, he died in the same year.
