RACING BEAU REVERE FOR OAMARU HURDLES

Waimate form is expected to be of good value at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter meeting today. Beau Revere, Le Roi, and Grey Jacket, three winners at Waimate on May 28, will have solid backing in their engagements today.

Beau Revere is in the hurdles, Le Roi in the steeples, and Grey Jacket in the open sprint.

Le Ro, outstayed Sarkey in the steeplechase at Waimate, and they ■were a good bit better than any of the others. That was Sarkey's first steeplechase, and it might have been a winning debut if he could have stayed beyond the reach of Mozart in the lead in the running. Sarkey had no reserves left for Le Roi’s challenge but was in no danger of losing second, finishing clear of Arctic Sun, which won the Otago Steeples at his next Start. Sarkey has not raced since Waimate. The light Oamaru country will suit him admirably, and he will probably outpace most if not all his rivals.

Le Roi fell in the hack steeplechases on the first and second days of the Dunedin winter meeting, then ran a distant second to Shootalong on a heavy track on the third day. He is hardy, and looks one of the brighter place prospects, but giving away 161 b to Sarkey sets him a big task. Hay Time will probably be Canterbury’s best. He was sixth at Waimate where he had his first race over country. Two starts earlier he won over hurdles at Nelson, and in the race in between he was a rather unlucky second to Mexico in the hurdles at Ashburton. Hay Time is a stablemate of Beau Revere, the ruling favourite for the Hack Hurdles today. Beau Revere will be favourite after an easy win in the hurdles at the Waimate meeting. He carried 10-4 there, and ran away from the others without being pushed at all. Today he has 10-11, which is top weight, and he should be equal to the task unless there is wholescale deterioration in the condition of the track.

Rangiora Winner Savoury has the best rating of the other hurdlers. He was successful in a weaker field at Rangiora last week. Wingatui form gives No Offence and Recluse fairly strong chances. = No Offence won against the hack ’chasers on the first day, and Recluse might have won one of the hurdle races if she had jumped better. Recluse was a fast-finishing second to Balance in the Otago Hurdles. After a second and three thirds in his last four starts Peak Effort will be solidly backed to win the Trial Handicap. His last-start second was at Wingatui. He was beaten half a length by Prince Charming, which will oppose him again today. Royaloil is another form runner in a big field. This halfbrother to Mighty Dollar has been ho worse than fourth in his last four starts. Chow Ming and Haughty Lady re-entered the Trial Handicap field yesterday when Needles and Beau Boa were scratched. Wandering Willie and English Prince, both from Washdyke Stables, will be two of the stronger fancies for the Awamoa Hack Handicap. But they may be matched for speed by Riccarton’s Carrageen, which would have built

up a better record by now only for his barrier behaviour. Glenpark was scratched yesterday for the Oamaru Winter Cup, the first leg of today’s double. That left 10 in the field and of them Matlock, Promise, Kelp, and Janel may be the strongest fancies. Medbury has been scratched for the Waikaura Champion Hack Handicap and will run in the Farewell Handicap. Phil’s Choice, from Orari, and Rhythm Rein, from Washdyke, are the only hacks with worthwhile form in the Waikaura Handicap. At the weights Phil’s Choice is expected to come out on top today. The form of most of the hacks in the Farewell Handicap is only fair, and Medbury stands a good chance of improving on recent placings.
