PARAPET FOR REMOVAL

State Building Contract

A contract has been let and the contractor has moved on to the site to prepare to remove the 700-ton parapet from the Government buildings in Worcester street and Cathedral square and replace it with a lighter more modem parapet. The work is expected to take about 12 months. The large amount of heavy stonework and rubble to be removed will have to be handled carefully because of the busy streets below. The parapet is of Oamaru stone backed with brick. It is 4ft wide right round the building, with a thickness of 6ft over the main entrance.

The cumbersome parapet is being taken from the top of the three-storey building because of earthquake risk. The new parapet, designed by the Ministry of Works, will be of pre-cast concrete, considerably lighter than the present one, and of a style in keeping with the character of the 50-year-old building.

When the old parapet is removed, a reinforced concrete band will be laid to tie the whole structure at roof level, much as a band ties a barrel.
