“FAR TOO MANY MANAGERS”

Former Athlete Attacks Selection System (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 16. Criticism of the appointment of some section managers for the New Zealand Olympic team for Rome this year was expressed today by a discus thrower in the 1950 New Zealand Empire Games team at Auckland. Mr A. E. Redmond. of Auckland.

“I think it is appalling that several sections of representatives with one competitor have been allocated a manager, notably wrestling, rowing and weightlifting, one man each, with a job to look after only one man,” he said.

“This is aH the more so when there are several outstanding competitors who could well have been included rather than a surplus of managers. “It is hardly encouraging to athletes of the present and future to thtnk that an administrator has a greater chance of wearing the silver fern than they are likely to have,” he said. “If a sports body wishes to pay tribute to one of its members for faithful service and hard work it could still send him or her to any Games meet, but why should it be as a New Zealand representative, complete with blazer and silver fem and all the same privileges extended to the competitors?”
