Trial Of U-2 Pilot

MOSCOW, June 15. Francis Powers, the American pilot shot down over the Soviet Union on May 1, will be put on trial in Moscow at the beginning of July, according to usually reliable sources.

The sources added it would be an open trial, with journalists, diplomats, and tourists invited. The exact date of the trial was not given Newspaper reports reaching Bonn from Moscow said it would not begin on July 4, America’s Independence Day. The United States admitted that Powers’s U-2 reconnaissance plane was involved in espionage, and the Russians said Powers would stand trial as a spy.
