CIVIL DEFENCE COMMISSIONERS MEET.—The first meeting of the regional commissioners for civil defence has been held in Wellington. The Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Anderton), on right, is shown meeting Brigadier J. T. Burrows, of Christchurch, Commissioner of Civil Defence for the northern region of the South Island. In the middle is Mr J. V. Meech, Director of Civil Defence. Brigadier Burrows is also responsible for the southern region of the South Island until a commissioner for that area is appointed. Initially, preparations would be against major natural disaster such as earthquake, Mr Anderton said, with the scheme readily adaptable for emergencies of any kind.
