ANIMAL HEALTH SUPERVISION

Mr D. W. Caldwell, formerly livestock superinteadent in the Department of Agriculture at Auckland, ■ has been appointed to a new position of chief advisory officer (animal health) in the department, and will be stationed in Wellington, Mr Caldwell will have charge of the departmeat’s programme for the improvenent of animal health and of efforts to control
infectious diseases of livestock, and will supervise the department’s precautions against the introduction «f animal diseases from overseas , Mr Caldwell's new appointment has been matte necessary in the main to enable Dr. S. Jamieson, who has beeffl chief, advisory officer (infections diseases control) to cope withlthe rapid expansion of the schemes for eradicating tuberculosis from town supply and factory .supply dairy herds. These have developed into the department’s major disease control activity and now embrace some 60,980 diairy herds comprising about *3 million animals, which are 'being tested by 225 veterinarians'
The technical and administrative work df supervising testing and the coordination and progress of the schemes will be undertaken by Dr. Jamieson as chief advisoty officer (tuberculin testing). Mr Caldwell will be a member of the Nevr Zealand delegation to the jfighth International Grasslands Congress at Reading, England, next month.
