TAX OFFENDERS’ NAMES PRINTED IN GAZETTE
The names of 270 persons or companies convicted of tax offences or charged penal tax or penal charge during the year ended March 31, 1960, are printed in this week’s Gazette.
Ninety of them are described as farmers, 15 as fruiterers, seven as milk vendors. A dental surgeon, a registered surveyor, and a professional golfer are also included.
An Auckland man is listed as a gambler. Between 1953 and 1957 he was estimated to have evaded £ 1668 in tax. The amount of penal tax imposed is £750. Two Wellington hotelkeepers top the list in the amount of tax alleged to have been evaded. One’s evasion is estimated at £12,280. A retired hotelkeeper, he has had a penal tax of £5OOO imposed. The offences relate to the years 1947-54 and 1956. The other hotelkeeper is alleged to have evaded £12,247 in tax. Penal tax imposed amounts to £6700. The following names included in the list have Christchurch addresses unless otherwise shown, and the amounts are gazetted estimations of tax evaded and the amounts of pena] tax imposed. Schedule 1
